Launch of Farmers Friend ProjectMonday, June 29th 2009 marks the official launch of Google SMS, a farmers friend mobile phone application that aims at delivering agricultural information to the Ugandan population, including the poor and disadvantaged communities. This application has been made possible through a team: Google (provides human and technology resources towards the development of the application solutions), Google.org (assesses the potential for mobile applications to provide socially relevant information for rural enterprises and households in East Africa), Grameen Foundation (develops holistic business solutions that create linkages between its corporate partners and NGOs, microfinance organizations and poor entrepreneurs, and the poor and local and global markets), MTN Uganda (telecom operator that provides the communications infrastructure as well as local marketing support, and leverages its unparalleled distribution network to ensure rural users are aware of and able to benefit from the applications) and BROSDI (an NGO in Uganda that aims at empowering the civil society through knowledge sharing and information management using ICT as a medium sothat they can improve their livelihoods. In the farmers friend application, they provide agricultural local content collected by farmers from the CELAC District Farmers Network; for a period of 4 years sofar.) ……………………………………………………………………………………
