Swine Flu Alert in Uganda:
There is an outbreak of this flu in some parts of Uganda. The virus spreads so fast and hence every one should be on the alert and take precautions. Symptoms include; Loss of appetite, fever, body weakness and pains, sore throat, cough, severe pneumonia. In some cases diarrhea, vomiting and death.

To prevent its spread, avoid close contact with sick people, cover your mouth and nose when caring for the sick person with a clean piece of cloth and through it in the dust bin after use, confine the person a separate room, wash your hands with soap/detergent and water after contact with such people. Do not eat un ready meat.

JANUARY 2010

4TH
Plant passion fruit seed 1.25 cm deep in beds, and transplant seedlings when 25 cm high. Incase taller, the tops should be cut off before planting.

11th
To control bacterial blast in passion fruit plants, plant windbreaks, remove dead or diseased twigs after the rainy period to reduce the spread of the disease and apply compost manure.

18th
To prepare land for passion fruit growing, plough 15-30 cm deep and clear weeds + rubbish before planting.

25th
Harvest passion fruits before shriveling and drying Or pick  when they fall on the ground.

FEBRUARY 2010

1st
To control sorghum anthracnose, add 85 gms of cut garlic to 50 ml of vegetable oil, and keep for 24 hours. Add about 2 litres of water and stir. Dilute 1 part of the mixture with 9 parts of water and spray on the crops.

8th
To control sorghum downy mildew, mix 2 garlic bulbs, match-box size piece of soap into 4 mugs (0.5litres) of water and leave the mixture for 24 hours. Strain and dilute 1 part of the solution with 9 parts of water to spray infected plants.

15th
Downy mildew is a disease caused by fungi. Leaves develop pale yellow, brown patches on the top. Fungal growth maybe seen when plants are wet. To prevent, use disease-free types, crop-rotate and avoid irrigating leaf tops.

22nd
Soybean maggots are pale yellowish-white seed corn pests that dig into seeds already in the soil. To prevent, plant seeds 5-7.5 cm deep in a well-prepared seed-bed. Plant at the onset of rains for quick germination and

To control leaf miner (caterpillars)   on eggplants, get 1 kg of neem leaves, dip in 2 liters of water and leave overnight. Boil for 15-20 minutes until 1/4 of the water is left. Dilute with 10-15litres of water. Use the solution to spray

3rd

 

Get garlic or onions and soak in water for 24 hrs, then spray to spray against termites and ants

10th

 

Dairy cow need a lot of water, if the cow does not get enough water, will produce less milk. A milking cow should be given 5 liters of water for every 1liters of milk it produce.

17th

 

Plant soy in a fine prepared land at the spacing of 60 cm x 5 cm and the depth of 2 – 5 cm for good growth and development when there is sufficient moisture. Germination will start with in five to 7 days.

24th

 

To control aphids, scale, and leaf miner which affect guavas causing the plant to stunt, get a handful of flesh tobacco leaves add 2 liters of water then boil for 20 minutes and allow to cool. Filter and add 10 liters of water and a spoonful of powdered soap then spray the guava 7 days interval.

JUNE 2010

 

Ants burrow in damaged tissue of guava and further damage the fruit.  To control get 3 cloves of garlic bulbs crush them and place them in covered glass jar with 4 ml of liquid paraffin for 2 days .Filter and add 10 liters of water and a spoonful of powered soap then spray on the crop 7 days interval.

Fish can be affected by poison which may cause damage and death. To prevent avoid poisonous material in and around the pond. To control, destroy all poisonous plants and materials around the pond like tephrosia

To control black jack, prevent seeds from being spread by cutting down weeds before they bring seeds. Destroy by burying them

21st

 

To keep away wild pigs and other livestock from the garden, mix animal urine, animal dung and water and make a thick paste. Pour the paste on the crops and fence off your garden.

Diseased mangoes may show signs like: spotted+ patched leaves and fruits, rotting fruits, stunting and drying of the plant, as a result of rust and anthracnose. To prevent plant healthy resistant seedlings, remove and prune infected parts.

12th

Diseased oranges show spotted + patched fruits and leaves, wilting and stunting of the plant. To prevent, plant improved varieties. Clear bushes in the garden and prune overgrown branches.

19th

Animals on heat will mount each other, urinate frequently, lose appetite, have red vulva, creamy discharge from the vulva, become restless, stand near exit and make noises.

26th

To control worms in livestock, get a handful of coach grass or asthma weed + dry silverfish, add 1 litre of water and cook. Give one cup per animal two times a day for 7 days or put in drinking container for birds.

AUGUST 2010

2nd

To feed chicken, give them whole grains, clean fresh water, protein foods, fresh greens and calcium. Give them salt but separately. Each broiler needs 0.2kg of feeds per day, while a Layer needs 0.1kg of feeds per day. A mature bird needs 1/2 - 1 litre of water a day. Water should be available in the poultry house all day.

9th

Diarrhea in birds may be a result of dirty food or water, newcastle, coccidiosis, typhoid or worms. To prevent, keep house+ feeding containers clean and provide clean food and water. Seek advice from your veterinary officer.

16th

Miscarriage in livestock may be a result of disease, injury, fatigue or poison. Ensure animals are well feed, rested and free from disease to reduce risk. Seek advice from Agric. extension worker.

23rd

Irrigate plants to survive during the dry season. Ensure that plants get only the amount of water they need directed at the roots to minimize loss through evaporation.

30th

To plant garlic, construct ridges 15cm above the ground, mix the soil with compost manure. Place garlic bulbs in lines of 10-15cm, spacing of 30cm and depth of 25cm.

Vanilla affected by disease may show signs like drying, yellowing of the stems and death. To prevent, plant disease free cuttings, remove weeds around the plants and mulch. To control destroy diseased plants.

To prepare site for bee rearing, fence the area to protect from thieves and large animals. Clear vegetation around hives to allow easy movement, and plant nectar producing plants.

To prepare garden for planting lemons, select a fertile land with loam soils, clear bushes and deep plough, dig again after 2 weeks before digging planting holes that last for 1 month before the lemon seedlings are planted at the onset of the rains.

To prevent pest attacks in your garden, clear weeds in and around the garden. Plant at the onset of rains to ensure a healthy crop. Destroy crop remains after harvesting that may contain pests.
